 Post subject: How do I stop my hamsters from chewing the carpets at the kitchen door?

I let my hamsters run about the living room in the evening. Is there any sort of spray or powder I can put down in areas I do not want them to go. They have started to try & tunnel under the kitchen door so I want to put stuff on the carpet to stop them chewing it. Any suggestions? What about pepper?
