Yesterday afternoon I purchased two Syrian hamsters....a male for my son and a female for my daughter. I heard they dont get along well with others so they live in separate tanks. Anyway when I first brought them into the house. I sat their cardboard containers inside the empty glass tank while I went to the bathroom for a few minutes. By the time I came back I saw that they had gnawed their way out of the containers. At first I feared a fight but they met and sniffed each other briefly and then left each other alone.

So I finally got their homes setup in their tanks. Out of curiosity I placed the male in the tank with the female. Since they didnt seem to mind each other earlier I thought it wouldnt be a huge issue. But when I placed the male in the females tank. She approached as if she was happy to see him she did NOT look pissed off as females are supposedly supposed to be when someone enters their territory. However when she got near him...a fierce fight instantly broke out. I quickly intervened and returned the male to his cage. No injuries on neither parties. It happened so fast I honestly dont know who threw the first punchor rather the first bite/scratch. I think the male did because like I said it didnt look like she approached him in rage.

So why didnt they fight during their first meeting? How soon do females mark their territory after getting a new home?

Again the females approach did not seem angry but when they got close....them things started kicking each others sses

because they didnt have territories when you first brought them homethe female was protecting her territoryhamsters are solitary and I had one lose an eye and a leg cause we didnt know thatand if you dont want like 12 hamsters you really shouldnt let them play together at allit only takes a few seconds for her to get prego.

they fought the second time because when they get older they have a fight for who is the boss. When the are younger they dont care but once they grow up they care and fight sometimes even to the death.

You put the male in the females territory so that is why she got vicious.

I suggest you dont try that again hun
