Two days ago my 6 year old was bit by a ferret at a pets store. The ferret came from Marshall Ferret fam. It was playing and lightly nipped her nose. It bled just a little bit. i know the ferret hasnt been vaccinated from rabies because we just bought a ferret from the same store two months ago. I have been doing research and have found that ferrets dont really get rabies and the ferrets have been in doors away from other animals including wild animals.


We called the dr to check with him and after waiting all day he calls us back to say that she needs to come in he called after the office was closed. He said she needs rabies shots and if we dont do it he will call CPS and have her taken away. I saw my cousin go through the shots after he was bit by a bat I dont want to see my 6 year go through the same thing but can not get any answers about it and the doctor is forcing us into this. Any one know of any reputable sites that I can print info from or someone to call?
The local health dept. has just seized the ferret and has placed it under observation. They will detemine the need for shots for my child after the observation . thanks for your help.

Is the bite infected? Does the pet store have any records on the ferret as to where it has been held raised etc. Ferrets in captivity are not required to get rabies shots.
I would suggest calling another doctor take your daughter in to them and ask them just to check her out and make sure she is ok. As long as you take your daughter to a doctor and can provide proof that the other doctor says she is fine then this jerk threating to call CPS wont be able to do anything. He can call but once CPS see that you did take your child to the DR and she is fine the investigation will be dropped. I would suggest switching to a different primary doctor. I have a 6 year old and have owned and been involved with ferret rescue operations.

GOOD GAWD Im sorry you are going through that Call another Doctor and see if the ferret can be quarantined for 2 weeksIf so call the pet store and make them quarantine the ferret or give you proof it didnt have rabies. Dont let them give you the bs that they have sold it. CALL the health department and ask them as well. The Dr. you called is an Idiot Ive been bit by stray cats a ratI rescued from a dry cleaners..that was a baby when I got him but had a vicious bite..I knew damn well he didnt have rabies..I did call and get an antibiotic my Dr. suggested to be safe as far as infection. But I dont believe for 1 second this ferret has rabies When a dog bites here in Ohio and is not up to date on shotsthe animal shelter or owner quarantines the animal for 14 days and do NOTHING until then for the human it bit until they do this. The ONLY reason this Dr is doing this is because hes a ignorant jerk Good Luck
