The best thing to use is hot sauce. I know it sounds cruel but it works. All it does is make them thirsty then they stop chewing. My hamster was chewing on his crittertrail and I used hot sauce and it worked fine.

Gerbils are well known for chewing anything they can get their teeth into so that is why they should be in a glass aquarium or gerbilarium. Bitter apple probably wont stop them and will more than likely just cause diarreah.

I hope your gerbil has a little buddy in the cage with him too. :

Just put in thinks like big bits of of people bedding your no something like the wood bunk beds? I have two pieces of the broken wood from my bunk bed in my gerbil vivarium and they love it This will work I wouldnt use things like hot sauce or bitter apple if you dont no what the end result will be. Some people may say its fine in the short term affect but it may be slowly killing them in the long term.

Gerbils should never be kept in critter trails... they can and will chew a hole through the plastic.

You are not likly to be able to deter him from chewing on it either. Bitter apple is safe... but not a good idea.

Anything you put in those tubes is going to end up on the fur of your gerbil once he crawls through the tube. Then when he goes to clean himself... he is going to be forced to clean the bitter apple off of himself. It wont stop him chewing because him rubbing against it will remove it from the tubes... and it wont be effective in deterring him from chewing on the tubes
