 Post subject: How to look after a tropical fish tank ONE DAY=DURATION OF OPEN TIME?

First off, this question is only going to be open for one day, as I'm going to go to the fish store tomorrow. How can you make sure fish will stay alive in a tropical fish tank. I've left the water for 1 wk. Got a filter and heater. All I need is the fish, but I want the fish to stay alive, any help? Thanks to everyone who helps =0]
