 Post subject: What's a good way to clip my cat's nails with a human nail clipper?

We've done it before but sometimes my cat bleeds or feels anxious/uncomfortable. No, we're not able to get one specially for animals. Help?
We got her from the shelter, so she can't be declawed. We know not to cut the quick and I repeat we CANNOT afford a kitty clipper. If you know about one under ten dollars, it would be great to post where I can get it ;)
